My god, I love Toni Maticevski. After missing the show at RAFW last year, I nearly broke down in tears.
Melbourne designer Maticevski studied at RMIT, and from this won an internship at Donna Karan in New York. After this, he studied with Cerruti in Paris for two years, then returned to Melbourne to create his own label. In 2002, he won Best New Designer at the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, and has showed his designs at consecutive Australian Fashion Weeks since.
His solo show at LMFF this year did not disappoint, continuing with his usual supreme elegance and ethereal darkness. Beautiful, wistful and poignant.
Only black and different shades of white, the collection featured an assortment of floaty organza, structured collared capes, wrapped solid layers belted at the waist, leather straps and tassles, brocade, floral details and feathers. The leather strapping brings an element of bondage to the collection, and adds an hint of rugged violence to an otherwise ultra-femme collection – this creates a perfect balance of delicate and tough. Just gorgeous.
